Cat with Crystals, not using the litter box after healing? Try this!

First off, i would like to state I am not a Veterinarian nor do I not have training in the field. I simply wanted to share what I did after our cat healed from having Crystals. IF your cat suddenly stops using their litter box please seek Vet advice immediately, as this could save their life!

As some of you know, a while back our poor boy Jaxy had a run in with Crystals.

It was a heart wrenching battle, but one that he made it through and healed very quickly from. However, the healing process did have it’s own form of hurtles to get through.

A lot of the time cats, who develop crystals, stop using their litter boxes because they tend to associate it as the source of their pain. So I’m sure you understand that they have to “go” somewhere right?

Lets face it cat urine is SMEEELLLY, and very unhealthy, breathing it in and having over exposure to ammonia can cause:

  • Nausea
  • head aches
  • respiratory infections, like pneumonia

That is why it’s so important to get on top of the pee and getting your feline pal back into the litter box!

To get them back in their kitty box

I’ll explain what i did, again I’m not a professional, i just love my fur babies and like to ensure they’re well care for and healthy.

Click here to read of the signs Jaxy had right before we rushed him to the Emergency clinic.

When we came back from the vet I had set him up in a separate room so he could have piece and quiet while he recovered. The room had pee-pad flooring set up, because I knew there would be accidents galore!

By the second day I noticed he was trying to urinate in the same area, on a pee-pad. That’s when i had the idea to place pee-pads into a lower bin that he could comfortably get in and out of. ( For our cat’s we use a rubber-made bin, it gives them more space inside, and was a way cheaper option then the traditional litter box).

So I got a new bin, something he wouldn’t associate the pain with. Inside of the new box i put a pee-pad down, also placing the box in the same area that he was urinating in (not urinating much mind you, because his body was still trying to break down the crystals with the help of the medications and S.O. wet food.) and put him inside of it. (like you would if you were to move the litter box).

He was in there for a sort time; did not use it at that point, came and had some snuggles. Then I left him for about an hour to rest.

When I came back in to check on him, he was snoozing away on a ” towel bed” I had put together for him. I seen some dibble marks on the pee pads that I had set up all over the room, which is typical of a cat who has crystals. However when I glanced into the new bin I noticed had USE THE LITTER BOX! Full pee and more! Such a sigh of relief, It was so simple and easy.

Once Jaxon started getting back to his normal comical self, I slowly started adding a little bit of kitty litter on top of the pee-pad every day, and bit by bit he re adjusted to using just his box and his regular litter.

Now I’ve heard, because cats can be so finicky, that sometimes they will still associate that particular litter with the pain they went through, and they may not use the box. Some people recommend having an additional box set up that you know they will use. That way they aren’t holding their bladders too long, as it is possible for this to cause the crystals to build up again. so in that case please keep a close eye on your kitty, and you may need to change brands of litter to something different and slowly add that instead.

Now not all cats are the same, I just wanted to share the process of what I did with Jaxon and hopefully it will be helpful to someone, and their fur babe, in need.

If your cat stops using their litter box, seek Veterinarian advice immediately!

Because we brought Jaxon in so quickly we were able to prevent surgery.

Jaxon made a full recovery and with the help of the Royal Canin S.O. wet food, he hasn’t had a Crystal flare up since.

Nana

The late night movies with chips, the laughs, going for car rides in your old truck to watch the deer as they frolicked through the meadows, and helping you at the corner store where you worked; these were just a few of the very fond memories my mum has shared with us about her Nana. We too, Bently and I, have our own very fond memories of our great Nana.

Our mum and our family lost her, Nana, a couple of Christmas ago, it’s been a tough one, for all of us really. She was such a strong, brave, and loving person; believe it or not she even was terrified of cats at one point!

I helped her through it, she told me she was once attacked by a cat when she was very little and she had been so scared of us ever since.

The more and more she visited the more my mum and I helped her adjust to me; we showed her how loving and calm I was.

Wouldn’t you know it after only a couple visits she was so comfortable with me she would pet me, and I would come and sit behind her- it was my favourite spot you know. I learned though, to make slower movements when I was heading towards Nana, as to not startle her. We really became good pals, I miss her very much.

This Ones For You Nana

Regardless of person or species, when we loose someone so dear, it can be a very over whelming and sad situation for all involved. No matter how big or how small the ones we love leave a mark with us forever, and they are never truly gone.

We miss you so very much Nana, but know your in a better place now. I will see you one day when I too cross that rainbow bridge. Until we meet again, we love you SO much!

Jaxy, at it again.

Oh well hi there fur fam!

Mum caught me snoozing in her art area, I wasn’t so impressed when she snapped some photos, like hey I’m sleeping here!

But once I seen how handsome I looked I forgave her, just look at thoughs poses, I’m a natural model if I do say so myself.

Well nice seeing yeah fam! **yawn** I’m going back to sleep, xo

A Travelling Cat Story

Every now and then I like to go with my mum and my canine siblings in the car for road trips.

The first time I ever went it was just at the tail end of summer and mum brought the dogs out of the house, little did she know I followed them right to her SUV. When she turned to pick the dogs up, to put them inside the truck, she was shocked to see me waiting along side with them. She laughed and said ” oh Jaxy, do you want to come to?” She then picked me up and placed me in the back seat with my brother and sister; this was so exciting! I hadn’t been for a car ride since I got neutered, and of course that wasn’t an enjoyable trip.

She cracked the back window, so much fresh air; I loved it! Bently was standing on the arm rest to get a better sniff through the slightly opened window; mum didn’t want it open too much in case I got scared she said, I followed Bently’s actions too get a better sniff, where on earth are we going?

Mum had the radio on, very softly, with the breeze and slight country music whispering in the background, it was a very enjoyable trip. Back then Sophee was very nervous in the car, so she slept curled up in a ball for the majority of the ride.

Soon we pulled up to this big building, it had a speaker that we drove up to. Mum then placed an order for a coffee and a couple treats; when we got up to the window the lady had a good chuckle seeing us all in the back and gave mum a couple of dog biscuits. She broke a little piece off for me, but I do’t like them so she gave one to Soph and one to Bently; she said I could have a different treat that I like at home. Oh boy road trips and treats, could this day get any better?!

As we drove, I presume home, I watched the trees sway, and listened to the birds chirp; I even seen a few different dogs I haven’t met ever before! I looked over at my siblings, Soph went right back to the curled up ball she was at he beginning of the trip, and Bently had his nose out the other window sniffing away trying to take in all the information he could before the ride was over.

As quickly as the trip had started, it was over and we were home again; aahhh that wonderful familiar feeling and scent of home. What a great relaxing little trip that ad been, I think I might just follow mum and the canines out for another trip sometime soon.

Hey fur-fam, have you or your furry friends ever been on a wonderful trip together? Leave us a comment, we’d love to hear all about your wonderful adventures!

Until next time fur family,

Sincerely,
